Introduction

Becoming an art teacher, for me, was a long road. Starting as an artist first, what really sold me on the idea was a book by Lois Hetland, Studio Thinking. Art is a way to teach our children how to actually learn to think and process information given to them in completely novel ways from conventional subject areas. Art is how we can reach our students.

What follows are slides from a PowerPoint presentation about Hetland's Studio Habits of Mind and showing how it works through a lesson plan about action painting and Jackson Pollack. The first segment involves students in grades 3-6, while the second segment is a modified lesson for Special Education.

Today's world, more than ever, needs thinkers.
That's why I teach art.
